Saflax Chinese Silver Grass

Chinese silver grass forms dense clumps and delights with its striking, silvery-shining, feathery flower panicles that adorn the garden from August until late autumn. As one of the largest species of sweet grasses, Chinese silver grass is best cultivated as a solitary perennial.

• Chinese silver grass is originally native to East Asia.

Our Tips:

• Enrich the potting soil with 25% perlite to increase the germination rate
• Gently press the seeds into the moist potting soil
• Cover the cultivation containers with film and provide them with holes so that the soil does not dry out
• Remove the film every two to three days for two hours to prevent mould formation
• Keep the potting soil moist but not wet
• Ideal germination temperature: 20 to 25°C
• Loves a warm and sunny location
• Water sufficiently - prefers moist soils
• Remove weeds particularly thoroughly in the year of planting out
• Fertilise once in spring from the second year onwards
• As the rhizomes of the Chinese silver grass spread strongly, a rhizome barrier is recommended
• Propagation by rhizome division possible - best in spring
• For container plants, ensure a tall pot is used, as the roots reach very deep
• Tie long leaves and stalks together in winter to protect them from snow load and wind - in the first and second year, additionally protect plants at the base with brushwood or leaves
• Cut back to about 10 cm at the beginning of spring
