Saflax Yellow Strelitzia - Mandela's Gold

This rare Strelitzia is named in honour of Nelson Mandela. It produces beautiful yellow flowers and grows up to 150 cm tall in containers. It is easy to cultivate and usually starts blloming in the third year.

Our tips:

• Wash off the wax layer of the seeds with soapy water before sowing and then scald the seeds with hot water to improve germination
• Then let the seeds soak in water for 48 hours while it slowly cools to room temperature
• Cover the cultivation container with cling film and provide air holes to protect the soil from drying out
• Remove the film every two to three days for about two hours to prevent mould growth
• Place the cultivation container in a bright and warm location at 20 to 25°C
• Note: In rare cases, germination can take up to six months!
• Keep the soil surface moist but not wet
• Place young plants in shady spots and mature plants in full sun locations
• Can be kept outdoors in summer; ideally against a heat-retaining wall
• Water heavily and thoroughly, but avoid waterlogging
• Strong root growth, so use a large pot
• Fertilise every two weeks from spring to autumn
• Repot into a larger container annually during the first few years
• Overwinter in a bright spot at 8 to 20°C without direct heat from radiators; spray regularly with soft water
