HEISSNER - Flow-Through Filters
Pond filter systems for biotopes, garden ponds & compact fish ponds
Flow-through filters represent the ideal solution for expansive garden ponds and ponds with significant fish populations. The operating principle is based on an open, gravity-fed system where water passes steadily through various filter media. Thanks to their substantial capacity, flow-through filters are specifically designed for aquatic environments with high nutrient loads or high stocking densities.
The HEISSNER range offers robust flow-through filter systems that are precisely engineered to harmonise with the appropriate pond pumps, ensuring consistent, long-term water quality for your outdoor sanctuary.

The principle of flow-through filtration
A flow-through filter is a non-pressurised, open system where water passes sequentially through multiple filter chambers. Within these stages, coarse debris is mechanically screened out, while dissolved pollutants are broken down biologically.
Ideal applications
- Large-scale garden and wildlife ponds
- Pond installations with moderate to high fish stocking levels
- Specialist koi ponds
- Aquatic features with significant water volumes
What are the advantages of a flow-through filter?
- Outstanding filtration performance even at high flow rates
- Effective water clarification via specialised multi-chamber technology
- Often modular and expandable to meet growing requirements
- Designed for continuous, high-load operation throughout the season
Recommended runtime
To maintain a healthy biological environment, the flow-through filter should operate continuously, 24 hours a day during the active months. During the frost period, the system may be throttled back or temporarily decommissioned, depending on pond depth and local climate conditions.
Cleaning and maintenance cycles
Depending on stocking density and nutrient load, maintenance is typically required every 2 to 6 weeks. Shorter intervals may be necessary during periods of intense summer sunlight or heavy fish stocking to ensure the maximum flow rate is maintained.
